PLATELET

Single donor platelets

Benefits
Platelets help patients with hemophilia and low-platelet counts due to hemorrhagic fever, leukemia, lymph node cancer, etc.

Methods
Platelet transfer is done by a computer-operated apparatus. Blood will be sent through a machine which will automatically distinguish platelets from red blood cells. Once the platelets are separated from the blood, the remaining blood components will be passed back to the body. A session of platelet donation takes approximately 1 hours. 30 minutes.

Important Requirements of Platelet Donors:

  • The donor's blood group must be identical to the patient who will be using the platelets.

  • The blood vessels at the elbow flexor are easily identified.

  • The donor does not take aspirin for 5 days prior to donation.

  • It is preferable that the donor has been donating blood regularly.
In general cases, the donor will not experience physical fatigue and therefore will be able to function normally. One can give platelets every 3 days. Blood donation is allowed one month after platelet donation.
